2nd Annual Collection Video

This time last year I made a collection video showing how far my collection had come, and so decided to repeat the process to see how much it had grown in one year.

This is my second attempt to upload this amateur video, so hopefully it isn’t disabled in the states and Germany again >_> Unfortunately I have only *just* noticed that my Iplehouse Arvid has been left out. There always seems to be at least one. Last year it was my Spiritdoll Cycas.

3rd time breaking doll collecting rule #5

A really good read for anyone who collects dolls that I recommend, no matter the type is “Top Ten Mistakes of Doll Collecting Newbies” which is an article written by Denise Van Pattern, a seasoned doll collector of all kinds and is the proprietor of Kathrine’s Cottage. Although when I first stumbled on the article I was a good year into my doll collecting ways, I found it really helpful and it does ring true. Even though doll collecting should be all about yourself and what you want to collect should be no one’s business but your own, I can’t help but find what’s written in the article is worth it’s weight in gold.

For instance, I have met some people that fall under rule ten who I really wish would read the article and realise what gits they are being (not on a modern vs vintage level, but on a bjd vs everybody else level) – it is perfectly fine to not like different types of dolls and not collect them, it is not ok to be rude about it.

I digress. The whole point of this post is my failings, not the failings of other doll collectors, and my main failing is in Denise’s rule #5Failing to Focus Your Collection“.

The first time I really broke this rule was with my Cupcake Dolls. You see all my dolls I collect from BJD to Catwalk Kitty actually flow together. The BJD work with my Pullips as they all have the asian aesthetic thing going on. My Monster High seem to naturally gel with these guys as they have the darker overtones my dolls tend to have and Catwalk Kitties mix in with MH easily. Even the few Living Dead Dolls I have fit in with this. Where do Cupcake Dolls fit? Simple and obvious answer is that they do not. I have my decent sized Surprise stuffies which fit with them, but to be honest there is a reason my Surprises are in a crate somewhere and my cupcake dolls are hidden in the back room and not on display. They belong in someone’s 90’s nostalgia toy collection and not on display in my doll cabinet. Eventually, I will probably sell my Cupcake off to someone else but in the meantime I’m still clinging on.

The second time was when I started collecting the lalaloopsy minis. Lets face it, tiny little dolls that look like cutsy rag dolls do not fit in with my bunch. But I get around this by declaring that they are my doll’s dolls. This is sound logic. Do not attempt to point out otherwise >_>

I broke this rule a third time last night, and it’s a doozey. I bought a barbie doll. And it wasn’t even one of those wacky, out-there collector Barbies. It was a Happy Family Midge. ‘Why?!’ I hear you ask, ‘you hate Barbie’. Well hate is a strong word, especially as for a big chunk of my child hood I loved Barbie, like almost every other little girl. And I still like some releases today as an adult collector. I really like the vintage Wizard of Oz set they re-released recently with the green skinned witch – I was lucky enough to have my local Target stock a set and I stood there in store with the green barbie in my hand and just debated whether I should or shouldn’t. In the end I decided no, no point, I’m not collecting Barbie.

I never had preggers Midge as a kid either, by the time she was released in 2002 I would have been 16 and dolls to me were just toys for kids, so there is no nostalgia for me. As a side note, I would imagine someone telling my 16 year old self a decade into the future I would be collecting dolls would be met with typical teenage snarkiness. I actually truly believe what spurred me into wanting Midge was the controversy behind her. It is why I like the Tokidoki Barbie so much as well.

So what now? Will I continue to get the rest of the Happy Family set? I actually wouldn’t mind 1 year old Nikki and 3 year old Ryan, but I’m not sold on Allan. Don’t like his dopey smile. And maybe this will spur me into hunting down an affordable Tokidoki barbie, and maybe I’ll rethink that Wizard of Oz set. Chances are not great though. I do have a spot picked out for Midge in my cabinet though, which is more than my newer MH dolls have at the moment.

I could say that this would be the last time I muck up on rule five, but chances are it won’t be. Maybe I should just give Midge a vampire dress. She’ll fit in then.

I’ve been a buyin’!

I’ve bought from online peeps Gill and the Howleen giftset, a couple of torso’s for cams (Vampire and then the 3 eye girl if I get her), mini Suzette La Sweet and Tuffet Miss Muffet and have also traded a spare MH stock set I had for a nude Frankie, who will get to wear an outfit pack.

I wasn’t wincing every time she slammed them into the desk making them dance. I promise.

Can’t wait for it all to come in, and hopefully no horrible eye wonk on these. Especially can’t wait for the CAM torsos, I have the most fun dressing them up, for some reason. As for the mini lalaloopsy, I really shouldn’t get any more, I mean, they are not my dolls. They are my doll’s dolls (I’m not nuts I swear) and I already have seven not including the two incoming. I want all four Sugar and Spice minis though, especially Jelly Wiggle Jiggle and Scoops Waffle Cone. I love Jelly’s all around design and Scoops has adorable hair. Bun Bun Sticky Icing looks darling and although she’s my least favourite, Cherry Crisp Crust has to come home too.

As for the above picture that is my partner’s niece playing with my mini Lala’s at my desk earlier this month. That’s Mittens fluff ‘N’ Stuff, Marina Anchors, Holly Sleighbells, Candy Broomsticks and Sir Battlescarred. Bea Spells-a-Lot and Dot Starlight were safely with my BJDs who were well out of her reach. I only mention it because the tyke’s mother bought her her own minis to play with recently. This surprised me greatly because her mother has openly said she is afraid of dolls (the mother not the baby), and has warned me to not buy her (the baby not her mother) a bigger lala for this reason. Something about their creepy eyes. Given the amount of dolls that live in my living room I’m guessing she doesn’t come over here often for this reason too. *stiffles a giggle* I’m just glad to have done my bit to spread the doll love =D

Lastly: Pullips. I haven’t posted this to my blog yet, so I will and I’ll use this image to make an about page on my pullip collection for this blog…eventually.

My collection as of now. No where near as big as some, but I feel it’s pretty big for me anyways.

Paint It Black

“I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black…”

So it’s a public holiday and since I don’t celebrate said holiday it’s a good time for some doll stuff. Since I bought a black torso off of ebay, I’m painting the spare upper legs and arms I have for my bee girl black to match (since I figured it would be easier than yellow). Unfortunately the spare uppers I have are from the dragon, so she will have scales, but they will be hard to notice once she’s painted I’m sure.

I still have a complete vampire minus torso I need to put together as well as buy her new shoes as my complete dragon is wearing them. I keep calling the dragon Calisi (khaleesi) thanks to Game of Thrones, and I have a feeling she and Rochelle will be fast friends when I finally get her.

Meowlody and Purrsephone have arrived from the US (thanks Mandy!!!) and they are purrfect, which I’m grateful for as apparently the QC on these dolls is low. Meowlody has a glue glob under her left eye which is an easy thing to get rid of and both have horrid box hair (but what MH doll doesn’t) so I’ll be having a spa day soon, just not sure how to best preserve their stripes.

I have well and truly run out of space in my cabinet and the newer MH have moved into the study, and have a shelf they share with my bf’s ‘action figures’ *cough*dolls*cough* and a My Scene I rescued from the Salvos. Soon enough they will over run that too I’m sure, but for now my bf’s G.I.Joe and Han Solo are in male doll heaven XD My one and only My Scene is just happy to be with the popular dolls now, and my poor lonely duo of Livs have to stare across the room at them feeling isolated.

Yeah…I’m not nuts at all really. I promise.

Hannah, my friend selling me the NS Galena head has said she will ship her to me early, and should be with in the next week. Super excited =D Then it’s on to choosing a wig and body…and then clothes. I must not get a head of myself though >_>

So my wishlist for MH now stands with most important to least:

  1. Gill
  2. Howleen and Clawdeen pack
  3. Rochelle
  4. Dorkson Jekyll
  5. Nude Cleo, Duece, Lala and 2x Frankie for fashion packs.

Not too bad, at the moment. Hopefully I don’t fall too far behind though.

April Fools!

Been quiet lately, mostly due to Mass Effect taking up all my waking thoughts and not because I’ve dropped out of the doll hobby or whatever. Also got a new pet (Jazz the boxer) and she is a lot more hands on compared to Maggie (my old-lady lab who likes to sleep all day).

News: I have bought the werecat twins from a friend in the USA, and I’m on the hunt for a Gil. Still on layaway for my Galena head and pukipuki, will be till next month.

Before I went quiet online on the doll front I took some snaps of some of my BJD crew on a sunny day, may as well share them:
